NORMANChelsea Clinton, playing a growing role in her mother's presidential campaign, had her picture taken and talked and joked with students Wednesday on the University of Oklahoma campus.

Said to be shy of the media, Clinton, 27, went to the Oklahoma Memorial Union to mingle with students while her father met with donors after speaking on behalf of his wife's bid to be the Democratic presidential nominee.

Handlers with Hillary Rodham Clinton's presidential campaign allowed reporters to watch from a distance. Ask a question of her or get too close to her, they warned, and reporters and photographers would be escorted away.

Deirdre Murphy, a campaign worker assigned to Oklahoma, said Chelsea Clinton has taken a leave of absence from her job to spend more time campaigning for her mother. She started going out on her own to talk with people about her mother's campaign after the New Hampshire primary.

Chelsea Clinton was gracious with everyone she met, and appeared to have left a positive impression.

"I'm pretty starstruck,” said Thomas Mayo, 19, who with fellow OU student and friend, Darren Townley, had their picture taken with Clinton.

"It was nice meeting her,” said Townley, a Republican, also from Washington.
