PEGGS — Authorities say a Cherokee County sheriff's deputy has been fired after he was indicted on forgery and embezzlement charges.

Roger Dale Fine was indicted last week by Oklahoma's multicounty grand jury. He had served as the volunteer fire department chief in Peggs and as a deputy in Cherokee County.

A local newspaper reports that Fine was fired Monday from his job with the sheriff's office. Fine also turned himself in Monday to authorities and was released on $1,000 bond.

The indictment accuses Fine of forging checks from the Peggs Volunteer Fire Department.

Fine stepped down earlier this year as fire chief. He has called the accusations a “misunderstanding” and says the truth would be revealed with a review of the department's financial records.
