TAHLEQUAH — Authorities at the Cherokee County jail say they're investigating after an inmate suffered a “suspicious injury” in his cell.

Authorities tell a local newspaper that Terry Lee Bolton was found unconscious in his jail cell Monday. Authorities say Bolton is in a medically induced coma at a local hospital.

Bolton's cellmate told authorities that Bolton suffered some sort of medical episode that caused him to fall backward and hit his head on the floor.

Authorities say inmates in nearby cells did not report any disturbance from the cell — only a sound described as a “thump.”

Bolton has been convicted on a drug charge and is awaiting a bed in a state prison.
