TAHLEQUAH — The Cherokee Nation is offering free radon testing this month for anyone living inside its boundaries.

The tests will be done in conjunction with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as part of National Radon Action Month, according to the tribe.

The tribe’s area covers all or part of Adair, Cherokee, Craig, Delaware, Mayes, McIntosh, Muskogee, Nowata, Ottawa, Rogers, Sequoyah, Tulsa, Wagoner and Washington counties.

Radon is a natural gas that is odorless, colorless and tasteless, according to the EPA. It can be harmful in large amounts; it causes more than 20,000 lung cancer deaths a year. It is the second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking, according to the EPA.

"Because you cannot see or smell radon, people tend to downplay the health effects and ignore the possibility there might be a silent killer in their homes,” said Ashley Wagnon, a Cherokee Nation environmental specialist, in a statement.
