Chess players of all ages came to the Myriad Gardens on Aug. 9, to play chess outdoors on the lawn and enjoy the scenery.

OKC Challengers Chess Club member Jake Williams is hosting chess games on Saturdays at the Meinders Garden Terrace. Chess Saturdays are open to players of all ages and skill levels.

Regular size chessboards will be set up on tables adjacent to the garden’s Ice House and Park House restaurants from noon to 6 p.m. Saturdays during the month of August.

Passion for playing

Williams, 23, recently moved to Oklahoma City after graduating from DePaul University in Chicago with a degree in history and a minor in political science.

“While I was living in Chicago, I developed a passion for playing chess, and I wish to improve the quality of my play now that I live in OKC,” Williams said.

“In addition to attracting people to the gardens, the Myriad Garden Foundation and I figure that it would be a good environment for someone who may be intimidated by the idea of playing with experienced club members.”

Williams said if the Chess Saturdays prove successful this month, he plans to continue them in September and perhaps October. Donations of $3 are requested but not required.
