"This game is for Kody. This is about honoring his memory and his family," VanCleave said before the game. "I know we're going to do that."
After an emotional pregame ceremony, the Chicks did their best to honor their fallen teammate with a 49-0 victory Friday night against Capitol Hill.
Friday night wasn't just Chickasha's first win of the season — it was their first home game since the death of junior offensive lineman Kody Turner.
Turner's mother, Crystal Coleman, was given a framed No. 74 jersey with Turner's picture on it before the game. After the first play, she was presented with the game ball and held it up in the air proudly.
"I've just been amazed by the outpouring of support from the whole community of Chickasha," Coleman said. "They've made Kody so special. It has touched us to the core."
It was two weeks ago Friday when Turner, 6-foot-3 and 315 pounds, died at the OU Medical Center after collapsing following practice that Tuesday.
