A 3-year-old boy died Wednesday after he was struck by a vehicle in a northwest Oklahoma City parking lot.

Police responded to the accident about 1 p.m. A mother and her two sons were crossing the parking lot of a McDonald’s, Northwest Expressway and Council Road, when the 3-year-old broke away from his family and was hit by a sport utility vehicle.

The mother and her 4-year-old boy also were struck, suffered non-life threatening injuries and were taken to an area hospital, police said.

The driver of the SUV, who has yet to be identified, was distracted by another vehicle at the time of the accident.

She was not arrested, police Capt. Dexter Nelson said.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing, police said.
