Choctaw's Becka Leathers won a national women's wrestling championship on Saturday in Lakeland, Fla., and will represent the United States at the world wrestling championships in Serbia.

Leathers, a wrestler for Choctaw High School, went undefeated in five matches at 132 pounds to win her weight class at the FILA Cadet National Championships for athletes ages 15-17 years old.

As a result of her victory, Leathers will train at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., this summer and compete for the United States at the FILA Cadet World Championships in August. FILA is the international governing body of wrestling.

Leathers, 16, defeated the top 15- and 16-year-old female wrestlers in the country in Florida to win the national title.

Leathers also will wrestle for the United States at the Lady Klippan Open in Sweden in February and at the Australian Open in June 2014.

“She is going to have a long year ahead of her,” said Choctaw wrestling coach Benny Coleman. “She gets to do a lot of traveling.”

Leathers wrestled for the Yellow Jackets this past season as a sophomore.

“The work paid off for her,” Coleman said. “She wrestled the boys all year long and it makes a big difference, a girl who can go through a boys practice year-round.”
