The NBA has filed for trademark rights to six nicknames for Oklahoma City's franchise — Barons, Bison, Energy, Marshalls (spelled with two Ls), Thunder and Wind, according to the U.S. patent and trademark office.

I like Thunder because it denotes power and action. Wind would be the subject of crude jokes. Energy and Barons are too mild and lame. Bison might be OK. Marshalls is spelled wrong.

Barons is a great name. Land barons, cattle barons, oil barons & train barons. Make the mascot the red baron and it even hints at the state's aviation history. Plus the NBA has a history of teams named after nobility. The Sacramento Kings were once the Rochester Royals, and the old ABA had the Kentucky Colonels and the Virginia Squires.

The WNBA names are kind of sweet, I think. How's about Oklahoma Momentum or Assertion? Don't laugh. Say it about 5 times slowly and open your mind.

Thunder doesn't work for me -- do you want to be known (among those that hate the move to OKC) as the Oklahoma City Blunder? Oklahoma City Plunder? Or, in honor of some NBA refs, the Oklahoma City Over/Under?
I also don't like "Energy." What is this, an Arena Football franchise? Or worse yet, a soccer franchise?
Marshalls is the place I go for polyester clothes.
Also, I agree with someone from another site -- get rid of "City" in the name -- all the New York franchises don't have to tell everyone they are in a city, neither does OKC. The nickname rolls off the tongue better too without it.
I like names like Stallions, Rattlesnakes (or just Rattlers), Tornados, Riflemen, Troopers, and Conquistadors (too long for a uniform?)

I like Thunderbirds also. I was in Oklahoma National Guard and my dad in WWII. Why not Use 4 of the listed names as one? Maybe that would help please more people because part of their favorite name would be used in the name or logo.

Thunder is the only really good name on the list for the NBA team. Bison recalls only buffalo and reminds me of slow moving things, and not very smart ones. The Wind is actually stupid......think of the jokes this would cause!! Energy is just play wrong. It sounds like an advetisement. Marshalls, with two L's, reminds me of the Movie 'We are Marshalls', or of law enforcement and not basketball. And The Barons appears to be kind of elete....only for the rich and popular????? Not for us common folk, surely. Ok, the name Thunder does arise some weather issues.....but 'rolling in like thunder....the power of thunder as well as weather......hey, everyone know this part of the country gets severe weather. For heavens sake, guys......get it toggether!!! THUNDER is the only plausible name evryone can connect to! AND IT DOESN'T HAVE TO END IN S!

Danny, one of the Oklahoma City TV news stations last night showed a proposed logo showing a charging buffalo herd with the name Oklahoma Thunder. The association worked well in my opinion. I don't have a dog in this fight, but if the name " Thunder " is adopted along with the buffaloes, I think it makes an effective and strong image. It ain't just about rain even though I'd welcome some.

Hey, Danny if you actually read this article or anything in the last week you'd know that Mark Rodgers and KOCO are the one's who said that the nickname was going to be Thunder. But I guess you were just thinking of creative ways to try to put down down OU and The Oklahoman instead of actually reading the article where it said KOCO reported that the name will be Thunder.

It would be interesting if the DOK would come out with another poll with just these six names and see how it turns out this time. I'm not so sure Thunder would win, although the other five names aren't great either. I would vote for Marshals just because it's different and I personally don't care for the singular names.

The more I think about it, the more I think they should go with Outlaws. Not because I like it (because I don't), but because it will be the name that gets the least amount of feedback from the fans and less ridiculed from the opposing team. Barons or Marshalls comes in a close second. Thunder could work if it's done the right way, but don't even get me started on Wind or Energy. Just put them in pink uniforms and high heels. But those could also just be for the dance team...

Barons is the best choice, but I suspect that Clay & Co. will opt for Thunder. It's a Thunder Blunder in my opinion.

How are you going to mascot and sell, "Thunder"?!
All Thunder is is loud noise and no physical substance -- sounds like most Swooner fans or Berry Tramel.
If you like Thunder, then why not Thunderbirds? You can mascot a Thunderbird (not the Ford one).
You chose "Thunder" and you're going to have some freaky, puffy, dark cloud looking thing with skinny yellow or white tights (symbolizing Lightening I suppose)? What esle could it be?
The little, gay, horsey character is already being used in Norman.

Say I've got two more then I'm shutting her down as it looks like we're getting close to making a choice. First, OKC Sodas after Pops on Route 66. Second, and I believe this is the best I've come up with, although I've had many good ones! I thought about Oklahoma's own little autobahn connecting OKC to Tulsa using two parts Philadelphia and came up with THE OKLAHOMA CITY 66FLY'ERS! Now you have to admit not only is that name unique, it even sounds like a basketball team.

Maybe we could've named the team the Okc Stallions because theres no team with the name that i've heard of and the stallion is a very powerful animal with speed. We could actually use the black, white and gold colors of the Barons uniforms that we saw on here a few months ago. Plus theres a whole lot of ways you can make the logo but I guess it's too late for my idea.....just an idea.
