EDMOND — Sequoyah Middle School choral music director Angie McKenna was named Edmond Public Schools' Teacher of the Year Tuesday during the district's annual celebration of excellence.
McKenna is a National Board Certified teacher who has been teaching at Sequoyah 15 years, according to a news release from the school district. She directs the vocal, jazz and show choirs.
“I never dreamed I would receive this honor and have the opportunity to follow in so many outstanding educators' footsteps,” McKenna said.
She said has a teaching philosophy of “doing whatever it takes” to help her students appreciate music and succeed at it.
Teacher of the Year committee Chairwoman Ruth Zumwalt said that “can-do” philosophy is one reason McKenna was chosen.
“We have so many outstanding teachers in our district, but what stood out about Angie is her passion and energy. She has a positive attitude that is just infectious and is always willing to do what
Students are prized
McKenna said she originally wanted to be in musical theater but had a change of heart after working in a day care during college.
“What I love most about teaching is the students — not the way they sing at contest, the trophies they win or the daily practice of learning to read music and rehearse parts,” McKenna said.
“They give so much in class and show their determination and character. Edmond has outstanding students, and I get to form bonds with students that go well past their years with me.”
Sequoyah Principal Jason Galloway said McKenna is a gifted educator.
“Mrs. McKenna is one of the most committed, dedicated and passionate educators I have ever met,” Galloway said.“Like many highly effective teachers, she makes a real impact in the lives of students within her classroom on a daily basis. It is simply awesome to watch.”
McKenna organized The Young Voices of Edmond, a choral group of more than 100 children, ages 5 to 15, that has performed with Disney star Jodi Benson and Broadway star Andrea McArdle. She also helps with the musical direction for Upstage Theatre in Edmond and directs a show choir of girls who perform at nursing homes.
McKenna is a member of the American, Oklahoma and Central Oklahoma Choral Directors Associations as well as the Oklahoma Music Educators Association.
