Christmas gift suggestions for genealogists

We the People: Looking for the perfect gift for a genealogist? Online database subscriptions and historical society memberships are good ideas.

Phyllis Young, a member of the Lawton Southwest Genealogical Society, submitted the following suggestions of possible Christmas gifts for the family historian and/or genealogist:

• Subscription to a genealogical online database for researchers who have a computer. Fee-only-access websites include (, FindMyPast (, Footnote (, GenealogyBank ( and World Vital Records ( For a complete list, visit Each online database offers different pay-for-access plans.

• Membership in a genealogical or historical society. Members receive journals and/or newsletters published by the society that contain data pertaining to area records. These publications are also one way of contacting researchers whose ancestors came from the same community through queries. Many societies offer look-up assistance to members and nonmember researchers. For a directory of societies, go to or check with your local library.
