A Christmas tree caught fire Monday afternoon and caused a family to lose its home and seven dogs, authorities said.

Firefighters were called to 1517 Shalimar Drive about 3 p.m. Friday and found the home fully engulfed in flames when they arrived.

Four adults and three children escaped. Three dogs and a snake also were removed from the home. But seven dogs, some of them puppies, did not survive, fire Maj. Brandon Pursell said.

Damage to the home was estimated at $120,000.
