KINGFISHER — Members of a local church are hosting a biker rally and poker run to raise funds to build a new church.

The Rev. Gary Barnhart, senior pastor of Abundant Praise Church of God, said Sunday’s biker rally and poker run is the latest effort to bring in about $50,000 to go toward a new church building.

Barnhart said the foundation of the church’s current building at 201 S Fifth is crumbling as a result of floodwaters two years ago.

Barnhart said he has been told the church building was built in the early 1950s. Church leaders began noticing major cracks in the walls in January and learned that it would cost between $60,000 and $100,000 to repair the foundation. He said that amount did not include other related repairs, so the congregation decided that it would be more cost-effective to build a new church.

He said Men and Women of Action, a group affiliated with the Church of God denomination, has agreed to build the church, but the congregation must pay for the materials.

Barnhart said the church of about 40 members sold fireworks earlier this summer and had a food booth at the Kingfisher County Fair to raise funds for a new church.

He said donations have been sent in from other groups and individuals as word spreads about the church’s circumstances.

Meanwhile, registration for the poker run will begin at 9 a.m. Sunday at the church. The biker rally will be at 10 a.m. and Gary Harms with Riding for Jesus will share his testimony. The poker run will begin at 11 a.m.

Barnhart said trophies will be presented beginning at 3 p.m. at the church.
