City Arts Center, a longtime fixture at State Fair Park, will become known as the Oklahoma Contemporary Arts Center, officials announced this week.

The new brand was developed following a six-month project designed to increase Oklahoma Contemporary's profile as a cultural destination. The center will move to a new building, which is scheduled for completion in 2016.

The Oklahoma Contemporary Art Center will focus on connecting the community with contemporary art, connecting art with the individual and showcasing the conventional alongside the unfamiliar, officials said.

“Our ambition is to create an art center where everyone can engage with art on their own terms, one where those who want to learn and create are given the tools and opportunities to do so at their own pace,” Executive Director Mary Ann Prior said.

“The launch of the Oklahoma Contemporary brand is a key part of our vision to form creative connections within our community, and we are looking forward to an exciting time ahead, launching new exhibitions, education initiatives and even a new building under our innovative brand.”

Founded in 1989 by businessman and philanthropist Christian Keesee and Kirkpatrick Foundation Director Marilyn Myers, Oklahoma Contemporary offers free admission to contemporary arts exhibitions and also offers youth art camps, adult art classes and workshops, lectures and independent film screenings.
