As the number of deer breeders and hunt farms grow across the country, DNA Solutions Inc. in Oklahoma City is tripling the number of animals each year added to the "North American Deer Registry.”
Almost 40,000 white-tailed deer across North America now have DNA on file with the Oklahoma City company.
The deer registry is similar to the bucking bull industry’s DNA registry.
Stock contractors want to breed the best bucking bulls from the rankest bulls in rodeo and must have proof of the lineage when selling semen from the animals.
Deer breeders are following the same model. They are turning to DNA analysis to grow the largest antlers possible on white-tailed deer.
And it’s working, said Brandt Cassidy, director of operations for DNA Solutions.
"When we first got into this, if you had a deer score 220, that was amazing,” he said. "Anything over 200 (inches) eight years ago was amazing. Now, they are getting 2-year-olds that score over 200, and 3- and 4-year-olds that are 300 and 400.”
DNA Solutions was created to perform human analysis, but deer breeders turned to DNA analysis to identify which bucks in their herd were producing the best offspring.
