Duncan, Oklahoma, officials sell animal corpses

A southern Oklahoma city is disposing of euthanized dogs and cats by selling their bodies to companies that provide specimens to schools and universities.

Agreements Duncan officials signed with two companies last week provide details about how the animals are handled, the Duncan Banner reported.

City Manager Jim Frieda said the money earned from the sales goes toward the city’s general fund. He said residents should not be alarmed by the contracts, because the dead animals are being used for educational or medical purposes. The city has been selling euthanized animals for about five years.

“For the most part, all of these animals are animals that are not claimed by any owner that might want to keep the remains or go through a burial process,” he said.

Both companies, Bio Company Inc. and Skulls Unlimited International Inc., are responsible for providing equipment to store the animal carcasses and disposing of animals that do not meet their standards.

Skulls Unlimited, an Oklahoma City business, will pay $5 for a dog as long as it has a full set of adult teeth and $3 for a cat carcass if it also has all of its teeth. The company’s owner, Jay Villemarette, said its mission is to make the “make the best of a bad situation” for the bodies of euthanized animals.
