— A monument to Oklahoma City native and civil rights activist Clara Luper was dedicated Friday at Hillcrest Memory Gardens in Spencer.

The monument was a collective effort of Luper's family, friends and former students. Luper was active in the civil rights movement and staged several sit-ins in Oklahoma City during the 1960s. She was also active in the NAACP.

The monument is near Luper's grave and features an etching of her on the monument. She died in Oklahoma City in June 2011.
