That's when he decided to go win the game himself.
Couch drove to his left, created separation from his defender, and drained a 15-foot jump shot with 12 seconds remaining to give Chouteau a 53-52 victory over previously undefeated Ketchum in the first round of the Class 2A boys state tournament.
“I couldn't hear the play coach was calling for, so I just went with it,” Couch said. “I always have the confidence to a shot like that. And even though I couldn't hear him, I knew my coach had confidence in me to go ahead and take it myself.”
Couch had just four points before knocking down the game-winner.
“Even though my shots hadn't really been falling all game I still felt confident taking it,” Couch said. “I've taken big shots my whole life. It doesn't matter how the game has been going for me, I can always take a shot like that with confidence.”
