Wayne tried to throw the state championship away, but sophomore shortstop Caleigh Clifton wouldn't let it happen.
Clifton belted an inside the park home run, doubled twice, knocked in three runs and scored twice to help Wayne capture the fastpitch softball title.
Wayne defeated Savanna, 6-5, in nine innings in the Class 2A title game at ASA Hall of Fame stadium.
Michal Hylton's infield single with the bases loaded in the bottom of ninth was the game-winner as Wayne won its first fastpitch softball crown since 1955.
Clifton was intentionally walked in the ninth to load the bases for Hylton, who also was the winning pitcher, allowing just three Savanna hits.
Hylton just wanted to put the ball in play on the game-winning at bat. She hit a high hopper to short and beat the throw to first.
“It was very nerve wracking, but we pulled it out,” Hylton said. “I just needed to do something with it, put it somewhere to get that runner in. I honestly didn't think I would make it (to first).”
Before Hylton's heroics at the plate, it was Clifton who kept Wayne in the game.
