DUNCAN — For a school that produced the likes of the Selmon brothers and J.C. Watts, it's ironic that Eufaula's first state championship would be won by a group of female golfers.

“There have been a lot of athletes that have come through Eufaula and no state championships,” said Eufaula golf coach Bill Bumgarner. “We've had a bunch of runners-up. I am real proud of what these girls have accomplished.”

The Ironheads finished 20 strokes ahead of Henryetta to win the Class 3A girls golf title Thursday at the Duncan Golf and Tennis Club.

“I think that is pretty awesome that it wasn't any boys,” said the Ironheads' Faith Lasiter of the school's first state championship. “I am so excited that it was us.”

In the individual competition, Ali White of Idabel won the state crown, finishing two strokes ahead of Lasiter. The two entered Thursday's final 18 holes tied for the lead with Morgan Brown of Henryetta. Brown finished third, three strokes behind White.

Eufaula won six tournaments this season counting the regional and state golf championships. The Ironheads turned out to be better than anyone expected at the beginning of the season.
