Class 3A girls golf notebook: Byng's Ashton Johnson takes positive approach

With a wind chill below freezing and gusts almost 40 mph, the story on Thursday's final round was the weather.

In addition to the cold, the round was delayed for 90 minutes by rain.

Hand warmers were a very popular item. Ashton Johnson of Byng even put them in her shoes to keep her feet warm.

She also drew a happy face on her golf balls that she would see each time she marked a ball to distract her from the cold.

“Just trying to stay positive,” she said.

COFFEE BREAK BY NO. 13

The most popular hole on the Duncan Golf Course Thursday was No. 13. That's because the 13th green was near a Braum's store.

“The green is probably 40 paces from the back door of Braum's,” said Byng coach Matt Fike.

Many parents of the golfers were making the trip to Braum's for coffee and hot chocolate for themselves and the players.

WHITE STAYED FOCUSED IN THE COLD

Ali White of Idabel, who won the individual state championship, credited her win to her mental approach on Thursday.

“I think I had a good mental game today,” she said. “I held it together when I was cold and hit a few bad shots.”
