With just a few holes remaining, Weatherford's Darby Morgan thought she had a chance to turn in a really special round Wednesday.

But the senior bogeyed four consecutive holes in her final five to finish with a 74 in the first round of the Class 4A state golf tournament at Lake Hefner South.

“I played pretty good, but it could've been better,” Morgan said. “I made some really good putts that helped me out, and I was hitting my driver well.”

No putt was bigger than the 30-plus footer she hit from off the green on the second hole (her 11th hole of the round).

The double-breaking putt put her in control.

Even with the rough finish, though, Morgan is still in great position entering Thursday's second round.

She's tied with Poteau's Hannah Ward for the lead. Clinton's Paige Neidy is two shots behind.

Morgan qualified as an individual for the fourth consecutive season.

Last year, she shot an 82 in the first round, good for fourth place entering the final day. She finished in a tied for third after shooting a second-round 81.

“It's exciting to be where I'm at this year,” Morgan said. “If we get to play tomorrow, it'll be great to have a chance to win it.”
