Class 4A golf notebook: Heritage Hall in position to defend title

With three freshmen in the starting lineup, Heritage Hall didn't begin the year as an obvious choice as a Class 4A state contender, despite being the defending champion.

With three freshmen in the starting lineup, Heritage Hall didn't begin the year as an obvious choice as a Class 4A state contender, despite being the defending champion.

But those freshmen, along with a pair of experienced seniors, have developed quickly, and go into the final 18 holes tied for the team lead with Ada at 584.

All five Chargers posted 36-hole scores of 149 or better, within five shots of par. Senior Gavin Mastell leads the way at 1-over 145, with freshman Tripp Harris at 146.

“Coming into this year, I didn't know how good we'd be, but these freshmen really stepped up,” said Mastell, who is bound for Central Oklahoma. “This is what we wanted to do, to come out with another state championship. We've just got to go out tomorrow and put up some good scores, and I feel this team can do it.”

CUMMINS LEADS YOUTH CHARGE

The top of the individual leaderboard is a strong statement about the youth golf in the state.

Led by Weatherford sophomore Quade Cummins, the top seven include a freshman, two sophomores and two juniors, with several underclassmen — like Heritage Hall's three freshmen — helping teams post low scores.
