Class 5A-6A state track notebook: Deer Creek boys, girls lead again

In the pursuit of a double-repeat, the Deer Creek boys and girls got off to a good start at the Class 5A state track meet Friday at Yukon High School.

The two-time defending champion Deer Creek boys scored 32 points in the six events that were completed Friday, for an eight-point lead over McGuinness and Ardmore.

The Deer Creek girls, looking for their second straight title, scored 34 for a 10-point lead on Carl Albert.

There are 11 events to be completed on Saturday.

Edmond Memorial boys score early

With victories in the 3,200-meter relay and the shot put, Edmond Memorial took an early advantage in the Class 6A boys team race.

Jordan Weltzheimer’s shot put throw of 55 feet, 4 inches, was good for a gold medal by more than a foot. The distance relay team of David Lytle, Ryan Nielson, Grey Howard and Harrison Pierce combined for a narrow victory with a time of 7:59.04.

The Bulldogs’ 48 total points on Friday was good for second place heading into the final day. Jenks leads with 60.

Santa Fe’s Hunter repeats in high jump

Same jumper, same height, another gold medal.

Just like last year, Edmond Santa Fe’s Josiah Hunter won the 6A high jump with a height of 6-8. Only one other competitor, Dervon Hill of Westmoore, cleared 6-6.
