Class 5A boys basketball: Tulsa Memorial beats Bishop McGuinness to win fifth title

Tulsa Memorial claimed its fifth boys' basketball state championship Saturday with a 59-42 victory over Bishop McGuinness at the Mabee Center.

— Tulsa Memorial claimed its fifth boys' basketball state championship Saturday with a 59-42 victory over Bishop McGuinness at the Mabee Center.

The Chargers (23-5) won their last title in 2008.

Tulsa Memorial senior Devin Perez led all scorers Saturday with 18 points.

McGuinness brought back no starters from its 2012 state championship team, but returned to the title game a year later nonetheless.

The Irish (24-5) led early in the first quarter Saturday, but Tulsa Memorial slowly pulled away as the game progressed.

In the Class 5A semifinals, McGuinness trailed Chickasha for much of the game before rallying in the fourth quarter. Against the Chargers, the Irish weren't able to battle back a second consecutive day.

Senior David Love — the Irish's only player to appear in last year's title-game win — led his team with 13 points.
