“I'm very, very proud of that,” McGuinness coach Gary Savely said. “McGuinness doesn't win that many academic state championships. We have a really smart group of guys.

“Ten years from now, winning the academic championship is going to mean more than winning the state title.”

McGuinness finished fourth, one stroke behind third-place Deer Creek.

Wolves make big move

No team did more to improve on the second day than Shawnee.

The Wolves were in fourth place to start the day before shooting their best team score in the third round to pass Deer Creek and Bishop McGuinness for second place.

Shawnee's No. 1, Garrett McDaniel, shot a final-round 74 to finish fifth overall. Daniel Langley, the Wolves' No. 2, shot his best score in the final round with a 77.

Cole Humphrey also shot his best score in the last round.
