Not many people were expecting Carl Albert sophomore Taylor Hawkins to be the one to ignite a spark.

But in a 1:30 span in the second quarter of the Titans 21-7 win against Bixby in the Class 5A state championship, that's exactly what he did.

Hawkins scored Carl Albert's second touchdown on a hook-and-lateral as quarterback J.T. Realmuto completed a pass to Markell Walker for three yards, who then flipped it to Hawkins for the final 20 yards with 9:09 remaining in the first half.

"We've been working on it against certain defenses and decided to give it a try, and it worked out perfectly," Hawkins said.

Realmuto said the Titans got the idea for the play by watching Bixby film, ironically enough.

On Bixby's ensuing possession, Hawkins had a huge, crowd-inducing "ooh" hit on a tackle and followed that with an interception.

TITANS SECONDARY COMES THROUGH

Coming into the season, it appeared Carl Albert had one of the best defensive backfields in the state.

In the state championship, the group came up huge in leading the Titans to the win.

"We knew coming in that we might be able to make some plays in this one," Walker said. "We had some opportunities, and we made sure we took advantage of it."
