Class 6A basketball: Omega Harris lifts Putnam City West to state tournament berth

— The video is still on YouTube. Omega Harris watched it a few times this year, reminding him of the pain.

The video shows Harris, Putnam City West's 6-foot-3 guard, making a 40-foot shot as the buzzer sounded in last year's area consolation finals against Lawton Eisenhower.

The shot was waved off for being after the horn. Lawton Ike went to state, PC West went home.

The teams met again Saturday night, again in the area consolation final, and Harris made sure the result was different. The junior scored 28 points, including a perfect 6-of-6 at the free throw line in the fourth quarter, to lift the Patriots to a 58-52 win over Lawton Ike at Norman North.

“I still watch (the video) sometimes,” said Harris, who made five 3-pointers Saturday. “In practice sometimes, coach (Lenny Bert) brings it up. To play them in the same game ... it was a great feeling to be able to beat them.”

PC West will face No. 4 Owasso in the first round of the Class 6A boys basketball state tournament next week. The Patriots are 15-11 on the season after starting 3-7 against arguably the toughest schedule in the state.

“I showed that video to a couple guys during the year, just reminding them that you can't leave any doubt,” Bert said. “A call here, some missed free throws, giving up layups — it was just that image of ‘how bad is it gonna hurt?'

“This team, they don't back down. They keep fighting.”
