EDMOND — Tulsa Union junior Marla Souvannasing is the classic example of a golfer getting hot at the right time.

Ranked fourth on the top team in Class 6A, Souvannasing won regionals last week and followed with a 1-under-par 70 Wednesday in the first round of the state tournament at River Oaks Golf Club. Souvannasing owns a five-shot lead over three players, including two teammates.

The last time Souvannasing won a tournament before regionals was Union's season opening tournament in Dallas the first week of March.

“My goal is to always finish in the top 10 (at state),” Souvannasing said. “If I won it that would be an honor.”

Souvannasing finished sixth at state as a freshman. Last year she was 11th, which provided motivation for this year's tournament.

She was 1-under through the front nine with two birdies and a bogey. She got to 2-under but double-bogeyed 15. Souvannasing drained a 30-foot putt to save par on 16.

“That got me back on track,” Souvannasing said.

She sank an eight-foot birdie on 18 to post the only red number on the board.

“Marla is playing really good golf right now,” said Union coach Vicki Brown. “The last couple of tournaments she's really picked it up. Right now she has so much confidence.”

There's a chance Thursday's final round might be canceled. Forecasts call for strong north winds, 60 percent to 70 percent chance of rain all day and 27-degree windchill temperatures.
