Tulsa Union is in good shape to capture its third consecutive team title and Redskins junior Marla Souvannasing owns a commanding five-shot lead in the medalist race.

The first round was played in mid-80s, breezy conditions Wednesday at River Oaks Golf Club in Edmond. But with winterlike weather arriving overnight, there's some question whether officials can get in the final round.

Officials set tee times, starting at 9 a.m. as scheduled, for Thursday. They're hoping to get in the final 18 holes. But forecasts call for strong north winds, 60 percent to 70 percent chance of rain all day and 27-degree windchill temperatures.

“We played like it was a one-day tournament, but I hope we get to play (Friday),” said Union coach Vicki Brown. “We're used to this kind of weather. It seems that's what we've been playing in all season.”

Souvannasing shot a 1-under 70 to help Union build a 17-shot lead over Broken Arrow.

Choctaw senior Kina Boone, who shot a 76, the top score among Oklahoma City area golfers, hopes they play the final round regardless of weather conditions.

“It would be pretty disappointing (if they canceled the final round) because I think I could shoot a pretty low score,” Boone said. “People sometimes have problems in the cold, but I can handle it. (Thursday) I was only 3-over at one point. I missed a few three-foot putts but I was playing really well.”
