Class 6A track: Putnam City's Schuyler Wood reaches peak, valley of state track meet

Putnam City's Schuyler Wood laid on the track, crumpled in pain and frustration, not 50 feet from where she stood an hour earlier to receive her gold medal. Wood experienced the best and worst of the Class 6A state track meet Friday at Yukon.

“Then, to see her so close to reaching her potential in the hurdles, it was tough.”

Wood's long jump win gave Putnam City's girls 10 points in the team race and with several qualifiers competing for points Saturday, the Pirates hope to stay in the hunt.

“With the events we're good in, we knew our points would come (Saturday),” Helms said. “Hopefully we'll be close to the leaders coming in.”

Wood will play a role in that as well.

After her fall, Wood iced her knee while athletic trainers cleaned up a few scrapes, but otherwise, Wood plans on being ready to compete in the high jump Saturday with no lasting effects from Friday's fall — physically or emotionally.

“Falling, it's just one of those things that happens. I wish it wasn't this meet that it happened, but what are you gonna do?” Wood said. “I don't think this (injury) is any big thing. I'll be all right.”
