MIDWEST CITY — Connor Karpe didn’t start for Lookeba-Sickles, but it’s a good thing he finished for the Panthers.
Karpe came off the bench to score 32 points, and hit the game-winning jumper with 2.5 seconds remaining in overtime to lift Lookeba-Sickles to a 72-67 victory over Tipton in the first round of the Class B boys state tournament.
Tied at 67 with seven seconds left in overtime, Karpe dribbled out of double team to the free throw line and was fouled while hitting the decisive shot. After he hit the ensuing free throw, Tipton turned the ball over on the inbounds play and Felix Bautista added two more from the foul line to seal the win.
While Lookeba-Sickles ended the game in dramatic fashion, it was Tipton that provided the excitement at the end of regulation. With the game tied at 58, Karpe hit a turnaround jumper and Bryson Lierle added four free throws to put Lookeba-Sickles (25-4) a 64-59 lead with under a minute remaining.
Jagger Jones answered for Tipton (20-2) with a three from the corner, then forced a steal and found Gerald White under the basket for a layup to send the game into overtime. Jones finished with 17 points to lead Tipton.
