A convenience store clerk stopped a robbery attempt Sunday by throwing a case of beer at her assailant.

About 2:30 p.m., Lien Nguyen, 70, was working the counter at the Best Stop Food Mart, 2331 S Central Ave., when a woman came in and pointed a gun at her, police said. The woman demanded all the money in the register and threatened to kill Nguyen.

“I told her, ‘Honey, I don’t have any money,’” Nguyen said. “‘If you kill me, you don’t have money either.’”

The robber then used the gun to hit Nguyen on the shoulder and the head.

“I got mad and I grabbed an eight-pack of beer and throw it at her,” Nguyen said.

The beer hit the robber, who fled before police arrived. She is described as a black female, 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighing 110 pounds. Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call 235-7300.

Nguyen said she had some bruises from being hit with the gun but was not seriously injured.
