Cleve Warren Quartet to perform Sunday at Norman's Santa Fe Depot

Warren, a drummer, will be joined by Larry Pierce on piano, Aaron Tomasko on bass and Earl Hefley on sax and woodwinds.

Warren has been in more than 57 bands and played in 40 states and five countries. He is a stylistically versatile musician, playing rock, blues, country and jazz.

In 1996, Smilin' Vic and the Soul Monkeys, the band he founded and led, won first place at The International Blues Talent Competition in Memphis, Tenn. The group played the W.C. Handy Awards and toured with the Blue Cruise, passing up an invitation to play President Clinton's second inaugural ball. Warren also founded and led the successful Short Dogg and the Dangerous Brothers.

A member of the Creek Nation, Warren has a bachelor of arts degree in history from Oklahoma City University. He is a music historian with extensive knowledge of musical artists in live and recorded events. For the last three years, he has been a contributing writer for Modern Drummer Magazine.

Preceding the concert at 2 p.m. will be a poetry reading by Richard Dixon.

Dixon says he is a “longtime transplant” to Oklahoma, having spent his childhood in a coal mining town in Pennsylvania. The former Norman resident now lives in Oklahoma City and is a retired teacher.
