Health department staff will give both injections and nasal mist forms of vaccine for swine flu, or H1N1, at two clinics from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday at
Norman Health Department, 250 12th Ave. NE, and
Moore Health Department, 224 S Chestnut St.
With the first shipments it received earlier this month, the Cleveland County Health Department focused its vaccination efforts to help stop the spread of the virus among school children.
Clinics were held in Norman and Moore schools with high absentee rates. Clinics also were held at
Newcastle and
Wayne school districts in
McClain County.
"We’ve focused on going out to children with our clinics because it seems to be hitting them particularly hard,” said
Amanda James,
Cleveland County health educator.
The H1N1 virus continues to spread in the state, she said.
"Each week it’s building with the number of cases, hospitalizations and deaths,” James said.
The Cleveland County Health Department now is expanding its clinics to other high-risk groups.
This week’s clinics are for pregnant women, custodial parents of infants younger than 6 months old, and children ages 6 months to 18 years.
The nasal mist will be given to healthy children. Shots will be given to pregnant women and children with underlying medical problems, according to health officials.
The health department will receive more vaccine in the coming weeks, said Administrative Director Shari Kinney.
"We will work with our local health care providers to provide the vaccine first to the priority groups that are most impacted by the new H1N1 virus,” said the administrative director.
The county health department will expand who can receive vaccinationsas more vaccine arrives, health officials said.
