NORMAN — Authorities in Cleveland County are working to hire a dozen additional employees as the county jail population reaches an all-time high.

Cleveland County Undersheriff Rhett Burnett says the jail had 449 inmates on Monday. More than a quarter of those inmates are awaiting transfer to the Department of Corrections.

A local newspaper reports that the Department of Corrections typically takes about 10 to 15 inmates per month.

Burnett says adding the new workers will ease the crunch at the new jail, which opened in January 2012. The $26 million facility was paid for by a temporary sales tax and has the capacity to house 540 inmates.

Burnett says he expects the number of inmates to drop as the inmates are transferred to other facilities.
