NORMAN — The Cleveland County sheriff released the name of a man who was shot and killed by a deputy Saturday morning during a traffic stop.

Nicholas Popplewell, 27, of Norman, was the passenger in a sport utility vehicle that was pulled over about 8:45 a.m. at 24th Avenue SW and Boyd Street.

During the stop, Popplewell ran to the deputy’s patrol car and got inside. When the deputy tried to pull Popplewell from the car, he began to drive away and dragged the deputy a short distance. Another deputy on the scene shot Popplewell, Cleveland County sheriff’s spokeswoman Meghan McCormick said.

Popplewell was taken to a Norman hospital where he was pronounced dead, McCormick said. Popplewell had outstanding warrants in McClain County on robbery and assault complaints, according to a news release.

The driver of the vehicle, Christopher Mormann, 36, told a deputy there were guns and drugs in the SUV. Mormann was arrested on drug complaints, booked into Cleveland County jail and was free on bond Saturday afternoon, according to the release.

Both deputies involved have been placed on paid administrative leave while detectives investigate the shooting. has disabled the comments for this article.
