NORMAN — Cleveland County commissioners voted Tuesday to delay considering a $50,000 contribution to the Cleveland County Veterans Memorial, at least for the time being.
Assistant District Attorney David Batton, the commissioners' legal counsel, said after the meeting that contributors to the project and their donation amounts have been in flux, so county officials will wait until that gets settled.
Commissioner George Skinner said he expects the board to vote on a contribution as early as next week. Batton said county officials expect the project's funding questions will be
answered soon.
The memorial plaza, to be built just south of Kidspace in Reaves Park, is estimated at $250,000.
It's a joint project between Cleveland County and the city of Norman. Each expect to pay $50,000 toward the project, which means private donations will pay for most of it.
Commissioners also heard the weekly Cleveland County jail report, which showed a daily population average of 172 inmates in Norman. Jail administrator Ed Miller's report covered the week of Aug. 19-26.
The overall daily average of 196 inmates included those housed in the Pottawatomie and Craig county jails. In Norman, the inmate count surged from 174 Saturday morning to 194 on Sunday, then slipped back to 174 the following morning.
The Cleveland County jail has a state-mandated limit of 177 inmates.
The county commissioners met Tuesday because of the holiday.
