Coach: Dez Bryant done at Oklahoma State

Dez Bryant has played his last down at Oklahoma State, his high school coach told The Oklahoman on Thursday.

Multimedia

"He was here this weekend," Lufkin High coach John Outlaw said. "We talked for a long time. He's going to Tampa to get himself ready for the (NFL) combine."

Outlaw's comments came hours after Oklahoma State and Bryant learned the NCAA had denied his final appeal for reinstatment. Bryant missed the Cowboys' last five games after being ruled ineligible. Bryant's eligibility came into question after the NCAA learned the All-American receiver had lied to NCAA officials about an interaction with Deion Sanders.

On Oct. 7, Bryant was ruled ineligible for violating NCAA Bylaw 10.1, shortly thereafter he applied for reinstatement. On Oct. 13, Bryant flew to Indianapolis to meet with NCAA officials and personally ask for reinstatement.

Last week, Bryant was ruled ineligible until September 2010 and OSU appealed to the NCAA's Student-Athlete Reinstatement Committee. That appeal was denied on Thursday.

That decision, coupled with Bryant's likely departure to the NFL, represents the end to a superb collegiate career. He had 147 catches for 2,425 yards and 29 touchdowns during his Cowboys' career. He also added three touchdowns as a punt returner.

"We're obviously disappointed for Dez. As a team, we'll move forward from here," Cowboys coach Mike Gundy said in a statement.

Gundy had allowed Bryant to skip some team activities, including practice, because it was difficult emotionally to be around the team while ineligible. He was in Dallas for an interview last week when the NCAA's initial decision came out.

"He's been in and out and around and in touch," offensive coordinator Gunter Brewer said earlier this week. "It's just been a struggle mentally and it's just been a tough time for everybody."

"He's still working out and doing some things and somewhat on his own and somewhat with us," Brewer added.

While Bryant was away, Brewer said, he had been "really trying to get with his family and make some decisions for him for the long haul." The Cowboys lost to Texas 41-14 last Saturday to fall out of a tie for the Big 12 South lead.

"I don't think there's any doubt it's been very, very emotional thing. It's a dream of his to play in games like that against Texas. It was very hard," Brewer said. "That's been his life, playing ball, and he loves playing college football. It's been taken away and that's just something we're all dealing with."

as a osu alum it saddened me to learn of the bryant suspension but what is worse is that many student athletes forget why they attend school..this seasons osu team has met several challenges and still has a chance to finish its sesason with 4 consecutive bowl trips for first time in school history and also play in san antonio alamo bowl which has strong osu following....building for the future shud be the goal and not short term success....what coach gundy has started shud in time be judged on merit alone...good luck to the cowboys and make the most of your opptys....still have tt and col at home regional tv and end up at ou....go cowboys...

Sure DEZ is out and won't be back because Ou the last game. Had he played at TEX or OU would't been anything said about it.

Facts; Bryant was interviewed about meeting with Deion Sanders because they waere looking into the possiobility of rules being broken. Fact: Deion does not have a straight up reputation in the sports world. Fact: T Boone pickens has been very visible in his support and ambition for OSU football. What the NCAA's assessment of that involvement is may be conjecture, but is it unreasonable to suppose they have questions and reservations at the least? . Time will tell if the NCAA is keeping an eagle eye on the OSU program and what the results of that scrutiny might be.
Kenneth, Norman - Nov 6, 2009 at 1:19 am
Kenneth your post was long on conjecture and very, very short on facts, i.e. you didn't have any.
Mike , San Antonio - Nov 6, 2009 at 12:07 am
Some people still don't get it. Bryant was deprived of most of his senior year not really for lying about his contact with Deion Sanders, I believe, but because the NCAA did not really buy the story that there was nothing improper that transpired - maybe due, partly at least, to Sanders' less than glowing reputation. Add the fact that the NCAA probably does not much care for T Boone Pickens'( AKA Big Oilman/Corporate Raider) very public involvement with OSU sports and you can see a very big target on the back of the whole program. Is that fair? Most likely not, but it may be a reasonable assessment of reality. Look for more problems in the months and years to come.

Dave, I hope with your attitude toward lying that you never have children that grow into teenagers, because I can almost guarantee that at some point they will not be entirely truthful to you about something. Better yet, when you were 19-20 years old, I hope you never told a fib about anything and then later admitted to it, or else you might be considered a hypocrite. All of you holier than thous claiming Dez got what he deserved must be real saints. He deserved some punishment, but come on, ruling him out for a year considering the offense he ADMITTED to, is just wrong. I have teenagers that I have caught in a few lies. That doesn't mean they are heathens as one poster called Dez. It just means that they thought they were in trouble and tried to get away with it by not telling the entire truth. Once they admitted their mistake, all was forgiven. They may have had to stay home some night when they wanted to go out or had some privelege revoked for a while. The point of all this is that you holier than thous saying Dez got he deserved are a bunch of hypocrites. And that is the TRUTH!!

What should be investigated is how much trash OU fans produce in life.

Sad for all of you OU losers, makes the good fans look terrible every day.

Mike, good point.

Dave, I'm calling you out because I know that you have lied during your lifetime. Unless you are the second coming of Jesus Christ. The answer to your moronic question is: ALL the teams in the NFL would be happy to have Dez, which is more than I can say for you, you miserable sanctimonious jerk.

The asses at the NCAA made an example out of Bryant. Plain and simple. Yes, Bryant did wrong, but come on a game or two at most would have been more than enough. A year is sadistic. Reggie Bush did much more, much much more and what punishment has he or USC received? Not a damn thing. The *astards at the NCAA are two faced hypocrites.

Surely there is more to it than we've been told. If there isn't, then Chad is right, the NCAA ought to have to pay a penalty of some sort. While I most certainly am not an OSU fan, I think Bryant and the team has gotten the shaft. Not that anything the NCAA does surprises me anymore. They're a little too full of themselves with some of their chicken-*&%# rules and regs.

Jason, are you an idiot or something? Comparing Dez to Prentiss? Prentiss got in a fight with a police officer and was later charged with all kinds of gang-related activity. Stuff that is against the law. Dez got scared and lied, but he never once broke any laws or did anything that would result in any kind of violation.

Nice humor - The NCAA is a joke & maybe if they'd release their findings they would have something to fall back on in the public eye. Rumor has it Dez had several opportunities to tell the truth & opted to lie more than just once. If that's the case, the NCAA should release that information & state their case. Instead, they sit on their thrones & make decsions & without giving any explanations. No wonder they are hated by everyone!
Kevin, Oklahoma City - Nov 5, 2009 at 3:48 pm

NCAA INVESTIGATING MORE COWBOY PLAYERS

In a new development in the NCAA's investigation of the Oklahoma State Football program it has been revealed by credible sources, that the NCAA may be considering additional rulings against Russel Okung and Kendall Hunter for lying to investigators during their trip in late September to Stillwater, to question Dez Bryant.
It seems that one investigator when meeting Kendall Hunter in the hallway asked him how his ankle was coming along. Kendall reportedly said that "It feels fine, everythings OK". The investigator has since said that "It seems that since he hasn't played but one snap since the Rice game, that this is an obvious "lie", and we will see what measures we must take, since lying to an NCAA investigator is a crime beyond all reason.
Also, during the same trip, the investigator says he was passing through the OSU dining facility and noticed Russel Okung with two slices of cherry pie on his tray. Thinking that it may be a case of "favoritism", since other players seemed to only have one slice of pie on their trays, the investigator says that he asked Russell if he liked cherry pie? Russells answer was, "Yes Sir, Cherry pie is my favorite". The investigator says that since that discussion, it has come to light, through several reliable sources, that Russells favorite pie is actually Dutch Apple. The NCAA has said that serious sanctions may be inacted for such blatant attempts to mislead an NCAA investigator during an ongoing investigation.
Sources within the OSU football program have said that Kendall's ankle actually did feel fine on that paricular day and are asking for an extension on the NCAA's decision, while concerning Russell Okungs offence they have stated that another player who didn't like cherry pie had given his to Russell, and that in general, "any" flavor of pie, is Russells favorite. The NCAA has responded by saying that in any case, having two pieces of pie may constitute an "unfair gratuity", and may still require strict sanctions against an out of control program.
