The U.S. Senate on Thursday approved an amendment by Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Muskogee, that would bar federal child care grants for people with assets over $1 million. The amendment passed 100-0.
According to Coburn, the Child Care and Development Block Grant program has an income test but not an asset test.
The grant money is used to provide child care subsidies to low-income families. Coburn said in remarks on the Senate floor that 16 percent of the money “has gone to people who are very wealthy.”
Coburn’s amendment would require people receiving the money to certify that they do not have more than $1 million in assets.
