WASHINGTON — U.S. Sen. Tom Coburn single-handedly has been blocking fast-track passage of a food safety bill, frustrating Senate Democratic leaders who tried unsuccessfully to get an agreement to appease him last week.

Since joining the Senate in 2005, Coburn, R-Muskogee, has used the "hold” power accorded to each senator dozens of times to block quick votes on legislation.
