DURANT — A Coleman schoolteacher accused of sexual misconduct is free on $150,000 bail, the sheriff’s office confirmed Monday.
Bill Ray Smith, 53, is charged in Bryan County District Court in Durant with forcible sodomy of a 15-year-old male.
Coleman is 22 miles north of Durant. School officials could not be reached for comment.
Smith was charged and released on bail Dec. 21 with the stipulation he is not to have any contact with the victim or any other person under the age 18, according to court records.
The investigation is ongoing and additional charges may be filed against Smith, said Lt. Carrie Wyrick, Durant Police Department spokeswoman.
Smith was staying in the same room with the victim on an out-of town church trip, Wyrick said. There were allegations of an improper relationship between Smith and the victim that prompted the 15-year old to change the room situation, she said.
Smith was asked to come to the Durant Police Department for an interview. Based on information given in the interview, he was arrested, she said.
He is to return to court Jan. 13 for a preliminary hearing, according to court records.
