Collected wisdom: Joe Castiglione, Oklahoma athletic director

OU athletic director Joe Castiglione talks about his time at the University of Maryland, his grandmother's Italian recipes and his job at Oklahoma.

Oklahoma athletic director Joe Castiglione was raised with the sense that his adoption was a very special element of his life. His mother and father never hid it from him, never made it a big deal. He thinks because of that, he's always accepted it and has never struggled with it. He's never really had the desire to seek out his biological parents — other than to know about his family health history — but from the time he was about seven years old, he knew he had one mother and one father and never thought twice about it.

He's also never thought twice about his job as the University of Oklahoma athletics department. He's here to continue the renaissance of Oklahoma athletics.

I walked on the football team for one year at the University of Maryland.

Well this will take all of about one sentence, I would say average at best.

I won't steal the line but I probably walked off just as fast as I walked on in terms of the history. You won't find any.

It was a dining experience that I'll never forget — the first time that I sat down and learned how to eat Maryland crabs.

It's an entirely different experience, learning how to eat blue crabs.

You've got to remember, I grew up in South Florida. Not surprisingly I was a big seafood eater.

This is a Forrest Gump movie if you're talking about shrimp and how many different ways that people can prepare crabmeat.

Given my Italian descent, I have just as many great memories of Little Italy in Baltimore. I love Italian food.

I don't know if it's really an Italian secret but it would be my grandmother's recipes. I can just tell you that very few of them were ever written down, I just learned them.
