College baseball: OU, OSU notch tournament wins in Arizona

Oklahoma blanks Manhattan, Oklahoma State does the same to Gonzaga. Both teams will play at the same time, 5 p.m., Friday at the Texas Rangers/Kansas City Royals Spring Training Complex.

Four pitchers combined for 10 strikeouts and just two walks on Thursday, helping Oklahoma to a 9-0 rout of Manhattan (N.Y.) at the Sanderson Ford College Baseball Classic in Surprise, Ariz.

OU starter Corey Copping improved to 2-0, allowing five hits and a walk in six innings. He struck out a game-high four. Relievers Connor Buchmann, Alec Hansen and Hayden Jones each threw an inning and struck out two.

The Sooners (6-3) had all they needed after the first inning, leading 4-0. They added three runs in the third inning and two more in the fourth. Manhattan (1-4) was hampered by four errors, which led to three unearned runs.

Sheldon Neuse, Mac James and Hector Lorenzana had two hits apiece for the Sooners, who played in front of former OU baseball coach Enos Semore.

Oklahoma continues Classic play at 5 p.m. Friday against Santa Clara (Calif.).

OSU TRIMS GONZAGA

No. 18-ranked Oklahoma State scored a run in the seventh inning and another in the ninth on Thursday to beat Gonzaga 2-0 at the Sanderson Ford College Baseball Classic in Surprise, Ariz.

Dustin Williams scored both runs for OSU (9-1), coming home on Bryan Case’s double in the seventh inning and Gage Green’s triple in the ninth.

Three pitchers combined to blank the Zags (2-7) on eight hits. Starter Tyler Nurdin struck out five and walked none in six innings. Brendan McCurry notched his fourth save of the season.

Gonzaga pitcher Taylor Jones was solid. He gave up one run on five hits in eight innings. Jones struck out eight.
