Ten years ago, Southern Mississippi would have been a better pick than Boise State to be the mid-major darling of college football.
But Boise State hired good coaches, built a program, upset OU in that epic Fiesta Bowl and the rest is history. The Broncos have averaged 12 wins and just one loss over the last six years.
All good things must end. Boise State is 3-1 but is lucky it's not 1-3, after wins of 7-6 over Brigham Young and 32-29 at New Mexico. Quarterback Joe Southwick has struggled to follow in the steps of the departed Kellen Moore, and now Boise State is not even ranked in the AP poll.
Now Boise State plays at Southern Miss, which has struggled itself after losing coach Larry Fedora to North Carolina. The Golden Eagles are 0-4, but they played Louisville tough before losing 21-17 at home last week.
Now Southern Miss gets Boise State in Hattiesburg. The Broncos are 101/2-point favorites, but their offense hasn't proven it can score enough to warrant such confidence. Let's go with Southern Miss in the upset.
