College football: Go with Stanford to upset home team Arizona State

by Berry Tramel Published: December 6, 2013

The Pac-12 is considered the second-best league in college football this season. Maybe so. But the Pac-12 remains rinky-dink in the way it crowns a conference champion.

The Pac-12 title game is played on the homefield of the team with the best conference record. That means 8-1 Arizona State hosts 7-2 Stanford.

Every other major conference uses a neutral field. The SEC in Atlanta. The Big Ten in Indianapolis. The ACC in Charlotte. The Big 12 settled on Arlington, back when it had a championship game.

But the Pac-12 gives homefield to, in this case, the inferior team.

Arizona State is 10-2 overall, but one of the victories was a referee-induced home win over Wisconsin. The Sun Devils lost 42-28 at Stanford back in September.

Arizona State is a 3 1/2-point favorite, but the wrong team is favored. Go with Stanford in the upset.
