College football: Loss to Washington State would put heat on Lane Kiffin's seat

Southern Cal athletic director Pat Haden has stressed that football coach Lane Kiffin is not under fire. Maybe not. But that could change quickly.

The Trojans did not play well last week in a 30-13 victory at Hawaii. Kiffin has not settled on a quarterback – sophomores Max Wittek and Cody Kessler shared time at Hawaii – and USC seems in the same doldrums that resulted in a 7-6 season in 2012.

Now Washington State comes to the LA Coliseum, and Mike Leach had the Cougars playing well last week, losing 31-24 at Auburn.

The Cougars are in the rugged Pac-12 North Division and don't figure to get much past the three-win total of 2012. But if Washington State can hang with the Trojans, doubt will creep in. If Washington State wins, Kiffin's days are numbered few.
