College football notebook: Iowa State backup QB quits
Iowa State backup quarterback Phillip Bates has quit the team.
His father, Phillip Bates Sr. , told the Cyclones his son was leaving the team effective immediately.
In a news release from the university, coach Gene Chizik says the school will give Bates the scholarship release he asked for.
