Projecting the 2014 Big 12 college football season:

Best player: Bryce Petty. For a league that is supposed to be traditionally quarterback-rich, the Big 12 has struggled there of late. OU was unsettled last season. OSU the last two seasons. Texas the last four. But Petty was sensational for the Bears.

Best coach: Bill Snyder. Of this or most any era.

Breakout star: Tyreek Hill. The Cowboys have proven they will get the ball to talented and skilled ballhandlers.

Game of the year: OU-Baylor. The league’s two most-hyped teams, by far.

Upset of the year: Texas over Baylor. Charlie Strong gets his Longhorns fired up for a foe that once inspired no fear in Austin.

Coach on the rise: Art Briles, who in Waco is building a Manhattan Miracle South.

Coach on the way out: Dana Holgorsen. Another West Virginia stumble will bring heavy heat to Morgantown. Charlie Weis could be a short-timer at Kansas, but firing him would require someone who cared about football.

Conference champ: Oklahoma. This is an even-numbered year, isn’t it? The last time the Sooners didn’t at least tie for the league title in an even-numbered year, it was 1998 and John Blake coached OU.
