A San Francisco college was placed on lockdown for about 45 minutes Monday afternoon after a cardboard cutout of a gun was mistaken for the real thing, according to a local CBS affiliate.

The station reports the prop was part of sociology of criminology class project. Students were asked to dress up as criminals, and one student wore a ski mask and carried a cardboard cutout of a gun.

Another student noticed the cutout, panicked and called police to report a person with a gun.
